Standard, in collaboration with Rootloop, conducted an environmental audit, resulting in the creation of a Roadmap for Green Transition. An environmental audit is a process that maps out a company’s green capabilities, the circularity of its business model, and creates a roadmap for enhancing its capabilities for a more sustainable future. Conducting a environmental audit within a company serves as a solid starting point for taking focused steps towards sustainable and more circular business operations.
As a result of the green audit, the current state of the company’s practices at both the organizational and business model levels was identified and mapped, along with their potential for future development. Input for updating the company’s environmental strategy was also developed. During the process, the company’s CO2 emissions within scope 1-2, and partially within scope 3, were mapped.
As a company, Standard has already taken several steps to reduce the CO₂ footprint of its production: hot air generated by its boiler equipment is reused for heating production facilities, oil shale energy as the main heating source has been replaced by cleaner fuels—wood waste generated during production is used as fuel, production residues are sorted, and new ways for their most efficient and energy-saving reuse are constantly sought.
As a result of the green audit, further development activities were planned to reduce the footprint even more. This year, Standard AS will renew the international ISO 9001:2015 quality management system certificate and the ISO 14001 environmental management certificate. Additionally, a sustainable development strategy will be created for next year, aligning with ESG and CSRD requirements.
The company plans to apply for FSC and other environmental certificates, which will enable process updates and communication of achieved results to the broader public. There are plans to develop an in-house environmental impact assessment calculator and implement a zero-waste policy.
Additionally, necessary innovation and design management metrics will be developed, and the level of strategic know-how in product development and design within the organization will be raised. This work will also lead to the development of products with minimal environmental footprints.
In production, the company plans to update heating systems and install an additional sawdust collection silo. An energy audit will be conducted, and the transition to green energy consumption will take place.
Standard AS commits to aligning its sustainability efforts with the 1.5°C climate ambition by halving absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030. The company’s goal is to develop a detailed plan for emission reduction, explicitly covering scopes 1, 2, and relevant categories within scope 3 emissions. In accordance with the emission reduction plan, the company will measure, analyze, and report the environmental impacts and GHG emissions in the relevant categories. This will allow for annual evaluation of the plan’s progress and success, with adjustments made as necessary to ensure the target of a 50% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030 is achieved.
Rootloop OÜ’s circular economy and environmental expert performed a DNSH analysis for the selected activities, confirming that the chosen activities do not significantly harm the achievement of EU or Estonian environmental goals.
